About the Artist

Julie Hammond
Julie Hammond has been drawing her whole life. The youngest of five growing up outside Chicago, IL,
she was blessed with siblings who are artistically talented in their own right and shared with her their individual insights:
Marcia — the use of color and the primacy of concept, Max — heartfelt vision and passion as well as a multitude of techniques,
Kirk — the importance of line in design, and Joan — beauty, proportion and innovation in art.
Although Julie began college with an eye to completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, she discovered that her approach to art
had little in common with that of her professors. Representational art was out of vogue, so Julie decided to pursue art on her own in order to
remain true to her inspiration. She changed her major to French and after graduation began a career as a
language instructor and ESL consultant. Her career in language learning has taken her to many places — including New York,
California and Latvia — but through it all, and from any locale, she continues to create art that satisfies.
Her influences are wide, from the earlier favorites of Michelangelo, Bernini, Rembrandt, and Friedrich, to late 19th century artists generally
and artists of the Symbolist movements in particular. Her major influences include Van Gogh, Levy-Dhurmer, Spilliaert and Delville.

"Art is NOT what the 'experts' claim—art is meant to be felt and understood.
Listen to your own voice."
